Gantt Charts Keep Field Service Projects on Track

Published: October 16, 2019

Simpro’s Project Management tools have taken a leap forward with the introduction of Gantt Charts. The new feature is part of a series of enhancements to strengthen Simpro’s field service project updates, including the recent changes to tasks. It has been developed based on user feedback in the Simpro Customer Ideas Portal, in conjunction with customer interviews.

Now, let's look at what’s new in Simpro to improve the way you manage your projects.

Your Simpro Gantt Charts FAQs

How does the new feature enhance field service operations?

Using the new Gantt Chart feature, project managers can easily view the project timeline. It helps staff to see, in real-time, the impact of any delays or changes to the schedule.

What type of work can I use Gantt Charts for?

You can create a Gantt Chart to manage and track the progress of all service and project jobs.

How do I use the online Gantt Chart?

You will now see a new tab titled “Gantt Chart” on Project and Service jobs.

From here you will be able to see an overview of the job’s tasks, grouped by sections and cost centres to the left. The Gantt Chart is displayed on the right and a navigation pane to the bottom of the screen allows you to focus on specific periods on the timeline.

Tasks are displayed in rows and edits can be made to the start date and end date by either adjusting the date fields or dragging the task’s progress block on the Gantt Chart. You can also update the task’s progress %. When you hover over a task’s progress bar, you can see the cost centre and task details such as the assigned technician.

The start and end dates for linked tasks will automatically adjust to all changes, which makes it easy to see the impact of all adjustments on the overall project timeline.

You can also continue to build your project directly from the Gantt Chart tab by adding new tasks.

Can I disable notifications to other staff while I’m adjusting the tasks?

Because all adjustments automatically save, we understand you don’t want to spam your stakeholders with notifications for every change. By default, the “Email task updates to stakeholders” toggle at the top of the screen will be switched to “Off”.

Is there more development planned to add extra functionality?

We are not intending to be a replacement for dedicated Gantt Chart software like Microsoft Project. But, we will continue to develop the functionality (there’s already extra features in development) and we want your feedback on what else we can do to enhance Simpro’s project scheduling, coordination, and reporting. So, please give the new Gantt Charts a try and then add your suggestions to the Simpro Customer Ideas Portal.

Are there any additional costs to use the feature?

No. This is a standard feature included with your Simpro licence.
